The Germany driving license theory test is a multiple-choice exam of 30 questions, taken on a screen at an official testing center. 1. How many questions the Germany driving license theory test has
The exam is made up of 30 questions in total:
- 20 questions from the basic material, which every candidate answers;
- 10 questions from the additional material for your specific licence class
Not every question is worth the same. Depending on how difficult it is, a question carries between 2 and 5 points. That weighting matters more than most candidates realise, and it is the reason two careless mistakes can end the exam.
2. How long you have to answer
You have roughly 30 minutes to complete the Germany driving license theory test. That is comfortable, and there is no benefit to finishing early. Rushing is the most common way to lose points on questions you actually know, so work at a steady pace and keep your concentration to the end.
3. How many error points you are allowed
To pass, you may collect a maximum of 10 error points. At 11 points you have failed.
- There is a second rule that catches people out: You are not allowed to get two 5-point questions wrong. If you do, the exam is failed regardless of your total. In practice this means the hardest questions are the ones to slow down on.

4. What you need before you can sit the exam
You cannot simply book the Germany driving license theory test and turn up. Several things have to be in place first:
- The 12 hours of basic theory lessons and the 2 additional hours for your licence class must be completed at the driving school where you are registered.
- Your application file must be approved by the licensing authority before you are allowed to sit the exam.
- Registration for the exam goes through your driving school, and they are also the ones who tell you once your file has been approved.
- A certificate confirming you completed the theory lessons
- A valid identity card or passport.

5. Which languages the Germany driving license theory test is available in
You do not have to sit the exam in German. Alongside German, the Germany driving license theory test can be taken in eleven other foreign languages besides English: French, Greek, Standard Arabic, Italian, Croatian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
The questions themselves are identical. Only the language of the wording changes.
6. How long the theory pass is valid
Once you pass, the result is valid for one year. Within that year you must take and pass the practical driving test. If you let the deadline slip, you sit the theory exam again from scratch.
7. How to prepare properly
