Getting a driving licence in Germany

If you are new to Germany, these are the questions that come up first. Below you will find short answers on the exams, the language you can sit them in, the documents you need and what it all costs.

Can I take the German theory exam in English?

Yes. Besides German, the theory exam is offered in twelve foreign languages, English among them. You have to request the language when your application is submitted, because you cannot switch on the day of the exam.

Is the practical driving test also available in English?

No. The practical test is conducted in German only. You do not need fluent German, but you do need to understand the examiner's driving instructions.

Is my foreign driving licence valid in Germany?

It depends where it was issued. EU and EEA licences are recognised. Licences from outside the EU are valid for six months after you register your residence, after which they must be exchanged. Depending on the country, that may require taking the exams.

How much does a driving licence in Germany cost?

Between €2,700 and €3,500 for category B, spread across driving school fees, lessons, exam fees, the first aid course and the eye test.

How long does the whole process take?

It depends on how quickly your file is approved, how many driving lessons you need, and how soon exam slots are available in your area. The theory pass is valid for one year, which is the window you have to pass the practical.

Do I need to speak German to attend a driving school?

Not for the theory exam, which you can sit in English. For the practical lessons and the practical test you need basic driving instructions in German, which your instructor will use in every lesson.

What documents do I need to register?

A valid identity document, proof of your German address (the Anmeldung, unless you hold a German ID card), a biometric photograph, a first aid certificate, an eye test certificate and the application form.

Can I start before I have registered my address?

No. Most licensing authorities require the Anmeldung before your application can be submitted.

How many questions are in the theory exam?

Thirty. You may collect a maximum of 10 error points, and you must not answer two 5-point questions incorrectly.

Who is the app for?

The app suits anyone preparing for the theory exam in Germany, whatever the licence class. It works equally well for complete beginners and for experienced drivers refreshing their knowledge before the exam.

How do I install the app after buying it?

Once your order is complete and payment confirmed, you receive an email with your unique activation code. The TheoriePLUS app can be downloaded from Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iOS), or used directly as a Web App on a laptop. After installing, enter your code to unlock full access.

How long is the activation code valid?

After activation, the code gives you full access to every feature for 12 months. The period starts when you activate, not when you buy.

What if I lose my activation code, or it does not work?

Contact us by email and we will look into it. Depending on the case, we can resend the code or help you complete the activation.

What does the app contain?

All 99 official TÜV / DEKRA test papers, updated for 2026, with the questions in English, licensed images and videos, a detailed explanation for every question, and progress tracking plus exam simulation features.

Can I return the app or the activation code?

Under § 356 (5) BGB, digital products such as activation codes cannot be returned once access has been provided. If the app was bought together with a physical product, only the physical item can be returned under our returns policy.
