Exam structure and test by class

The motorcycle theory test Germany follows the same principle as class B, but each licence type has its own particularities. Below you will find the essentials for each class, so you know exactly what to expect and how the app helps you prepare efficiently.

Note: theory lessons are counted in teaching units (Doppelstunden), each lasting 90 minutes, in accordance with the FeV. The practical hours listed below are the minimum required and may be higher depending on the learner’s progress.

Class A

• What you can ride: all motorcycles and three-wheeled vehicles, with no power restrictions
• Minimum age: 24 (direct access), or 20 after two years holding class A2
• Theory: 12 double lessons of basic material + 4 double lessons of additional material
• Practical: training area, hours in built-up areas, plus special hours: 5 outside built-up areas, 4 on the motorway, 3 at night
• Theory exam structure: 30 questions (20 basic + 10 additional), maximum 10 error points

Class A2

• What you can ride: motorcycles with a maximum power of 35 kW and a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg
• Minimum age: 18
• Theory: 12 double lessons of basic material + 4 double lessons of additional material
• Practical: training area, hours in built-up areas, plus special hours: 5 outside built-up areas, 4 on the motorway, 3 at night
• Theory exam structure: 30 questions (20 basic + 10 additional), maximum 10 error points

Class A1

• What you can ride: motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cm³, a maximum power of 11 kW, and a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg
• Minimum age: 16
• Theory: 12 double lessons of basic material + 4 double lessons of additional material
• Practical: training area, hours in built-up areas, plus special hours: 5 outside built-up areas, 4 on the motorway, 3 at night
• Theory exam structure: 30 questions (20 basic + 10 additional), maximum 10 error points

Class AM

• What you can ride: light two-, three- or four-wheeled vehicles up to 45 km/h, with a combustion engine of no more than 50 cm³ or an electric motor with a continuous rated power of no more than 4 kW
• Minimum age: 15
  Note: until your 16th birthday, the licence is valid only within Germany.
• Theory: 12 double lessons of basic material + 2 double lessons of additional material
• Practical: training area and hours in built-up areas, with no compulsory special hours
• Theory exam structure: 30 questions (20 basic + 10 additional), maximum 10 error points

Mofa

• What you can ride: bicycles with an auxiliary motor, or mopeds up to 25 km/h, with a combustion engine of no more than 50 cm³
• Minimum age: 15
• Theory: 6 double lessons of a special moped course
• Practical: basic instruction, around 90 minutes – there is no practical exam
• Theory exam structure: 20 questions (15 basic + 5 additional), maximum 7 error points
  Note: by passing the theory exam and completing the practical instruction, you receive a test certificate (Prüfbescheinigung), not a driving licence in the conventional sense.
