Getting a driving licence in Germany: the essentials
Getting a driving licence in Germany is more structured than in most countries. Attendance at a registered driving school is compulsory, the theory and practical exams are separate, and your instructor decides when you are ready to be examined. If you are new to the country, these are the four things worth knowing before anything else.
Can you take the theory exam in English?
Yes. Alongside German, the theory exam is officially available in twelve foreign languages, English among them. The one catch is timing: the language has to be requested when your application is submitted, not on the day of the exam.
The practical test, however, is conducted in German only.
Do you already hold a licence from another country?
Then check this first, because it may save you the entire process. EU and EEA licences are recognised in Germany with nothing further to do. Licences from outside the EU are valid for six months after you register your address.

What does it cost?
Between €2,700 and €3,500 for class B in 2026, spread across the driving school registration, lessons, exam fees, the first aid course and the eye test. Prices are higher in large cities.

Which licence class do you need?
For a car, class B. Within class B there are three variants, depending on whether you learn and take the test in a manual or an automatic – and the choice affects what you are allowed to drive afterwards. For motorcycles the classes are A, A1, A2 and AM, by age and engine power. For trucks and buses, C and D.
