Exam structure and test by class
General notes on the truck driving license in Germany. For all truck classes (C, CE and C1/C1E), theory training is counted in double units (Doppelstunden), each lasting 90 minutes. It is also worth knowing that the number of practical hours can vary depending on the learner’s progress: your instructor decides when you are ready for the exam, based on how safe and confident you are at the wheel.
Good to know: Licences for the professional classes C, CE and C1 are valid for 5 years. After that period you do not have to sit the exam again, but a general medical check and an eye test (Sehtest) are compulsory in order to renew. If you do not renew in time, your entitlement to drive vehicles in that class expires.
Class C
- What you can drive: large trucks with a total mass over 3,500 kg, with a trailer of up to 750 kg
- Minimum age: 21 (18 for professional drivers in training, under the BKrFQG – the German professional driver qualification act)
- Licence required beforehand: class B
- Theory: 6 double lessons of basic material + 10 double lessons of additional material
- Practical: basic training plus compulsory special hours: 5 outside built-up areas, 2 on the motorway, 3 at night
- Theory exam structure: 37 questions (10 basic + 27 additional), maximum 10 error points
Class CE
- What you can drive: class C trucks with a heavy trailer attached, with a total mass over 750 kg
- Minimum age: 21 (18 in vocational training)
- Licence required beforehand: class C
- Theory: 6 double lessons of basic material + 4 double lessons of additional material
- Practical: basic training plus compulsory special hours: 5 outside built-up areas, 2 on the motorway, 3 at night
- Theory exam structure: 30 questions (10 basic + 20 additional), maximum 10 error points
Class C1
- What you can drive: trucks between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, with a small trailer of up to 750 kg
- Minimum age: 18
- Licence required beforehand: class B
- Theory: 6 double lessons of basic material + 6 double lessons of additional material
- Practical: basic training plus compulsory special hours: 3 outside built-up areas, 1 on the motorway, 1 at night
- Theory exam structure: 30 questions (10 basic + 20 additional), maximum 10 error points
