How the bus exams and tests are structured
General notes on the bus driving licence in Germany. Theory lessons are counted in double units (Doppelstunden), each lasting 90 minutes. Practical training is counted in individual units of 45 minutes (Fahrstunden).
The total number of practical hours varies according to each learner’s progress. For professional classes such as D and D1, the basic training is more extensive and includes more driving hours than other classes, reflecting the complexity of the vehicle.
Professional licences for buses, coaches and minibuses are valid for 5 years and are renewed without an exam – all that is required is a general medical check and an eye test (Sehtest).
Class D
- What you can drive: large buses and coaches carrying more than 8 passengers (excluding the driver), including with a trailer of up to 750 kg
- Minimum age: 24 (or 21 / 18 in special cases for vocational training)
- Licence required beforehand: class B
- Theory: 6 double lessons of basic material + 18 double lessons of additional material
- Practical: driving hours in built-up areas (approx. 45 hours), plus special hours: 22 outside built-up areas, 14 on the motorway, 8 at night
- Theory exam structure: one test of 40 questions (10 basic + 30 additional), maximum 10 error points
*The class D section of the app also includes the questions for class DE, which allows you to drive class D buses with a trailer over 750 kg.
Class D1
- What you can drive: minibuses carrying up to 16 passengers (excluding the driver), with a maximum length of 8 metres
- Minimum age: 21 (18 in special cases for vocational training)
- Licence required beforehand: class B
- Theory: 6 double lessons of basic material + 10 double lessons of additional material
- Practical: driving hours in built-up areas (approx. 41 hours), plus special hours: 19 outside built-up areas, 12 on the motorway, 7 at night
- Theory exam structure: one test of 35 questions (10 basic + 25 additional), maximum 10 error points.
*The class D1 section of the app also includes the questions for class D1E, which allows you to drive class D1 minibuses with a trailer over 750 kg.
